So I found through the Tumblr grapevine that @m-azing had the awesome idea: “What if Tangled was set in India?” and then @rghayati drew it, and I loved it so much I needed to draw my own. I will now forever be disappointed that this version of Tangled doesn’t exist.

all-white casts in Animated Children’s (fantasy) Movies

A list of exclusion in media aimed at children

“If children’s movies, far more than adult movies, present their audiences with role models that are crucial to the development of their own identities, then such issues are of crucial importance.”
-M. Keith Booker, discussing Disney

Included is any animated children’s movie that also contains fantasy elements, so that we can completely shut down the “But historical accuracy!!” arguments before they even start up (esp. because they tend to ignore the long history of PoC presence in most European nations etc). You can’t have dragons yet claim there are no PoC because it would have ruined the historical setting.

For movies that it’s been too long for me to remember, others have added to the list for me. Feel free to add your own.

It would also be interesting to come up with a list of movies that contain only PoC characters, though that is way different from an all white cast. Having an all white cast feeds into the idea that white is the default and the norm- which is part of white privilege & PoC oppression in America- of which no opposite, white-exclusion-in-media force exists, obviously.  People “accidentally” create an all-white cast all the time; audiences often don’t even notice these casts are all white because they’ve been conditioned to see it as normal. And this post isn’t even getting into movies that have a token sidekick or background PoC character to deflect criticism, which is a problem in and of itself. This is only the instances of full out exclusion.

  • Tangled
  • Fern Gully
  • Beauty and the Beast
  • Toy Story
  • Alice in Wonderland
  • Treasure Planet
  • The Croods
  • The Little Mermaid
  • Rise of the Guardians
  • The Swan Princess
  • Sleeping Beauty
  • Quest for Camelot
  • We’re Back
  • Snow White
  • All Dogs Go To Heaven
  • Shrek
  • The Last Unicorn
  • Thumbelina
  • Brave
  • Anastasia
  • Aristocats
  • The Black Cauldron
  • How to Train Your Dragon
  • Cinderella
  • Who Framed Roger Rabbit
  • Despicable Me
  • Most of the Barbie Movies (too many to individually list)

reblogging to include some edits and also note in text that I did not include movies where there were no visible PoC, but animals voiced by PoC, since that can have troublesome connotations, and also it’s hard to really say whether kids are aware of the voice actors’ races, and the impact on kids and their perception of race and inclusion etc is kinda the point.
