Later on, I told the children we smashed the sled for fuel, though this was a lie. Mostly we were tired of the memories. The sled, with its polished, steel rails and hickory seating, reminded us what winter used to be. The children still loved it, however, and it was occasionally useful, so Alex and I came up with an excuse: We would go hunting; drag the sled along in case we caught a deer; and—horror of horrors!—lose our way. We’d spend the night in the forest, break up the sled, use the wood for fire, and return dutifully with the precious metallic remains.

So it went.

We hunted, in a manner of speaking, with a perfunctory eye out for deer, but Alex had lost his prescription lenses a long time ago and our glassmaker couldn’t nail bifocals, so that was that. As for me, my heart wasn’t into the hunting. I loved venison, but I didn’t want to shoot any deer. I just wanted to burn the fucking sled.

Stop it with the fic where Steve is terrified of Natasha, or Maria, or Pepper, or guh, Darcy. I guess people think it’s cute, or whatever.

Seriously. Strong women don’t make Steve scared, they make him swoon.

The only thing Steve is afraid of is that strong women won’t like him.

Acting like Steve is afraid of women also ignores one of my favorite moments of the movies, where Steve isn’t sure if Clint can be trusted, but he looks to Natasha and it just takes one nod from her for Steve to be okay with it. He respects people who know what they’re doing, male or female.

More than that, strong women are kind of his type. Peggy Carter, Sharon Carter, Bernie Rosenthal, Rachel Leighton, Janet Van Dyne, Natasha Romanoff, Wanda Maximoff. Are you seeing the pattern here?

Much is still unknown about the attackers, yet already there has been a widespread consensus that this is the result of Islamic extremism. Today all Muslims in Britain are being blamed for the actions of two men. Particularly shocking was the BBC’s Nick Robinson rushing to say the men were of “Muslim appearance”, and the reporter on ITV news describes it as the “day that Baghdad style violence came to South London.”

The media’s repeated scapegoating of the Muslim population and its continual ‘clash of civilisations’ narrative must be challenged. It is time we recognise and fight against the distorted depictions of Muslims we see every day in the media. When a Muslim murders a white man it is denounced as terrorism and considered worthy of rolling news coverage but when a Muslim is killed in a racist attack, like the one on 75 year-old Mohammed Saleem in Birmingham earlier this month, it is treated as a one-off murder and largely ignored. These blatant double standards are not acceptable.”
